What to Look for in a Sports Dentist

Not every dentist approaches athletic protection and emergency care the same way. Choosing a sports dentist means choosing someone who understands both prevention and real-time injury response.

  • Experience With Athletes
Choose a dentist who regularly works with athletes and understands the physical demands, risks, rules, and patterns of injury associated with different sports.
  • Custom Mouthguard Protection
Look for a provider who offers professionally fitted custom mouthguards designed for maximum protection, comfort, speech, and breathability.
  • Emergency Availability
Sports injuries can happen anytime. A strong sports dentistry office should be ready to guide you quickly when sudden dental trauma happens.
  • Proactive Treatment Plans
A quality sports dentist focuses on prevention with regular exams, screenings, and practical advice to help reduce injury risk and support peak performance.

At Avorio Dental®, our focus is keeping athletes protected before the season, during competition, and when urgent injuries need immediate attention.

Choosing the Right Mouthguard

Athletes in organized and recreational sports should wear a comfortable, well-fitted mouthguard that does not restrict breathing, resists tearing, and is easy to clean. While several options exist, custom mouthguards offer the highest level of protection and comfort.

Mouth-Formed / Boil-and-Bite

Softened in hot water, then shaped around the teeth at home.

Pros

  • More affordable
  • Easy to find in sporting goods stores
  • Better fit than basic stock guards

Considerations

Can wear out faster, may be difficult with orthodontic appliances, and often makes speaking and breathing less comfortable.

Stock Mouthguards

Pre-made in set sizes and sold ready to wear.

Pros

  • Inexpensive
  • Widely available

Considerations

Least protective option. Cannot be tailored to the mouth well and often stays in place only when the mouth is closed.

Why Custom Usually Wins

Custom mouthguards are designed around your actual bite, which means better retention, more comfort, easier breathing, and stronger protection during contact and impact. For athletes who train or compete regularly, that difference matters.

Mouthguard Care Tips

  • Wash it in cool, soapy water before and after use
  • Brush it with a toothbrush and toothpaste for extra cleanliness
  • Do not chew on it
  • Do not wear removable retainers with it
  • Replace it if it shows wear and tear

Emergency Treatment of Athletic Dental Injuries

Fast action can make all the difference. If a sports-related dental injury happens, staying calm and knowing what to do right away can improve the chances of saving the tooth and limiting long-term damage.

Avulsion (Entire Tooth Knocked Out)

  1. Avoid additional trauma while handling the tooth. Do not touch the root, scrub it, brush it, or sterilize it.
  2. If debris is present, gently rinse the tooth with water.
  3. If possible, reimplant the tooth and stabilize it by gently biting on a towel or handkerchief, only if the athlete is alert and conscious.
  4. If reimplantation is not possible, place the tooth in a proper transport medium. Best option is a physiologic transport medium such as Hank’s Balanced Saline Solution. Milk is a strong backup option.
  5. If needed, wrap the tooth in saline-soaked gauze. As a last resort, place it under the athlete’s tongue only if the athlete is fully conscious and alert.

Time matters. Reimplanting within 30 minutes gives the highest chance of success. Transport to the dentist immediately.

Luxation (Tooth Still in Socket, But Out of Position)

Extruded Tooth

If the tooth appears raised or hanging down, gently reposition it in the socket using firm finger pressure, then stabilize by biting gently on a towel or handkerchief. Transport immediately to the dentist.

Lateral Displacement

If the tooth has been pushed back or pulled forward, try to reposition it with finger pressure. Some athletes may need local anesthetic for full repositioning. Stabilize and seek immediate care.

Intruded Tooth

If the tooth appears pushed into the gum and looks shorter, do not attempt to reposition it. Transport immediately to the dentist.

Fracture (Broken Tooth)

  1. If the tooth is broken in half, save the broken piece and bring it to the office using the same transport steps used for a knocked-out tooth.
  2. Stabilize the remaining portion in the mouth by biting gently on a towel or handkerchief to help control bleeding.
  3. If there is severe pain, avoid contact with other teeth, air, or the tongue because the nerve may be exposed.
  4. Transport the patient and tooth fragments to the dentist immediately.

Helpful tip: For transporting a knocked-out tooth, the Save-A-Tooth tooth preserving system can be a helpful option. You can also direct athletes and families to Athlete Resources for additional sports dentistry information.

5 Sports Safety Tips to Help Prevent Facial Injuries

1. Mouthguards Are a Must

Custom mouthguards are far less expensive than repairing a serious dental injury and are designed to hold teeth in place while allowing normal speech and breathing.

2. Helmets Help

Helmets absorb impact energy and help protect the head during contact, falls, and collisions.

3. Protect the Eyes

Protective eyewear matters, especially in sports where fast-moving equipment or close contact is involved.

4. Face Shields Add Another Layer

Face shields can help prevent severe facial damage from balls, pucks, racquets, and player-to-player impact.

5. Support Mandatory Protective Gear

Protective equipment works. Coaches, parents, schools, and leagues should encourage safer play at every age and level.

Whether your child is playing organized sports or simply being active on the playground, accidents happen. Basketball, football, bicycling, playground activities, and soccer are among the most common causes of childhood injuries, which makes prevention and preparation even more important.

Who Can Benefit From Sports Dentistry?

Sports dentistry is not just for elite athletes. It is valuable for children, teens, and adults involved in school sports, club teams, martial arts, cycling, skating, and recreational activities where falls or contact can happen.

  • Youth athletes in school and club sports
  • Adults in recreational leagues
  • Patients with orthodontic appliances who need tailored protection
  • Parents and coaches who want a clear emergency action plan
  • Anyone active in contact or impact sports

FAQ
  • Yes. Custom mouthguards typically provide the best fit, strongest protection, better comfort, and easier breathing compared to boil-and-bite or stock options.

  • Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently if needed, try to place it back in the socket if the athlete is alert, or store it in a proper transport medium or milk, then get to the dentist immediately.

  • Mouthguards are recommended for contact sports and many recreational activities, including football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, hockey, soccer, cycling, skateboarding, and similar activities where facial injury is possible.
